Vocalist · Composer · Improviser
Based in Parma, Italy
Angela Malagisi is an Italian vocalist, composer, and improviser based in Parma, active within the contemporary European jazz scene. Her work moves across jazz, folk-influenced songwriting, and elements of world music, developing a personal language through a warm and versatile voice.
She began her musical Journey at very young age as a member of the children’s choir of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, performing in opera productions and concerts as both choir member and soloist. She later turned her attention to jazz studies, enrolling at the Conservatorio “Arrigo Boito” in Parma, where she completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees with highest honours.
Her artistic research focuses on sound, vocal expression, writing, and the desire to create a musical world whose highest ambition is to express herself authentically. Her compositions are shaped through experiences in theatre and improvisation-based contexts, rich in lyricism and freedom, opening onto a strong imaginative landscape exploring themes of loss, inner strength, and reflections on both personal perception and the surrounding society.
Important encounters and studies have taken place with musicians such as Roberto Bonati, Roberto Dani, Cristiano Calcagnile, Barre Phillips, Han Bennink, Sidsel Endresen, and Norma Winstone. She is active in contemporary European jazz contexts with ensembles including the Chironomic Orchestra, the Parma Jazz Frontiere Orchestra, and the European Jazz Workshop.
In 2023 she founded Angela Sull’Acqua, an original music project in which she works as singer and composer. The project carries her name, followed by a personal image of great serenity and the memory of floating halfway between sky and sea. The project was selected as a semifinalist for the Premio “Isio Saba-for the creativity and innovation in jazz music”. Her debut album, also titled Angela Sull’Acqua, will be released by the Norwegian label AMP Music & Records.
